Parmigiani

Great review, Ping!

Your article is fantastic, and yet another example of your flair with words.  I love reading you!  You successfully captured and distilled for us in an enjoyable way all the pertinent information we could want regarding this piece.  I wish I liked the watch as much as your review of it.  In all fairness to Parmigiani, I will never be the kind of woman who can fully appreciate the aesthetics of a timepiece like this.

To me, this piece is extremely successful as an expensive accessory in the same vein as a Harry Winston necklace, but is less palatable IMO as a watch.  I can't tell time with this piece.  That's a huge drawback in my book.  In terms of design, there is a certain whimsy to this piece that I enjoy, and the use of sapphires as part of the calendar display is different, interesting, and attractive.  The second hand is also intriguing and eye-catching.  I do, however, question the robin's egg blue for the dial.  Why not a lustrous midnight blue or deep cerulean to enhance the night-time constellation effect?  The pale blue color, coupled with the fanciful moonphase, second hand, date indicator, and diamond constellation dial skews so young that if I didn't know better I would think the messaging here was to entice fathers to buy the watch for their daughters.  I would also have preferred that the diamonds in the bezel be set in an invisible setting, if possible.  Choosing an invisible setting would've resulted in a cleaner look.

The construction of the watch looks gorgeous.  I particularly like the lugs, which have a beautiful flowing shape.  The detailing on the caseback, and the movement in general almost redeem this piece.  That rotor too!  Gorgeous!  I applaud Parmigiani's attempt to make a serious mechanical watch for women (and thank goodness the case isn't tiny -- at roughly 40mm it's the perfect size IMO).  I unfortunately think a large proportion of women -- based on my informal poll of female co-workers -- could care less about the mechanics behind the watch, as long as it's pretty and preferably covered in jewels.  There's nothing wrong with that sentiment, and frankly, in this case Parmigiani offers a watch that is way beyond those parameters.  The watch seems well-constructed and beautifully finished.

I just wish I liked this watch more.

Thanks again for a brilliant post.  I know a lot of women will be into this watch, so kudos to Parmigiani.

Cheers,
Daos
