Thank you so much for this thoughtful response — it’s exactly the kind of perspective I was hoping to find here.
Your wrist-feel observation on the Pagoda is genuinely valuable. The 5500P had been on my shortlist precisely because of its platinum case and limited production, but the 1997 date does push it outside the vintage parameter I’m working within, and your hands-on experience saying it didn’t feel right on the wrist is the kind of insight I couldn’t get from photos or auction listings. Worth weighing seriously.
The Top Hat 1450 has been pulling me toward it too. Its stepped Art Deco profile feels like it would create real visual contrast with the round 2509R while staying in the same horological tradition. The challenge has been finding one in white gold or platinum within budget — yellow gold examples are more accessible but would create some metal redundancy with the rose gold 2509R.
The additional references you suggested are genuinely interesting — several I hadn’t seriously considered:
• The 492 as the ancestor of the 5105 is a pairing I hadn’t thought about. Are you aware of how many 492 examples are reasonably known to the market today?
• The 2461 I’d love to learn more about — what makes you most drawn to that reference?
• The 2503 “Bunny Ears” is new to me. The sculptural lug treatment sounds like exactly the kind of distinctive case design that would make a real statement next to the more restrained 2509R.
• The 3404 confirmation is helpful. I’d actually been considering a specific 3404P platinum example with engraved silver dial and extract, and your “very nice on the wrist” comment is reassuring.
• The 2470 and 2469 tonneau references I’d love to see your posts on if you could point me to them.
Of all these references you’ve handled or studied, which one do you think would create the strongest aesthetic dialogue with a 2509R Type 1 specifically — not just as a standalone watch, but as a complementary piece in a two-watch collection?
Thank you again. I’ll definitely share my findings and the final decision when the search concludes — it may take some time, but I’d much rather wait for the right piece than settle for an adequate one.
With genuine appreciation,

Stefano
