Platinum and diamond
Thanks all for the posts. I think it might just be for would be buyers to confirm they are buying a platinum watch and not a white gold one. I agree with Eric that it is ridiculous because if this was truly the reason, they should have done it for all platinum cases or none. As I understand it (and I am by no means an expert on Patek or any other brand) the older 5059s did have the diamond and the later ones did not. I have a 5059 from 2006 and it does not have the diamond. I suppose it is just another one of those quirks of a prestige watch maker. Ah well.....

Just out of curiosity, why is it some patek platinum watches have a diamond on the case at the 6 o'clock position whereas some don't? I was speaking with a dealer today who thought all PP Platinums have a diamond but I know that is not the case with the 5...

I think the diamod is purely to help potential new owners of pre-loved (or hated) platinum watches know it is platinum! I remembered i heard somewhere that many watches. vintage (1920s~1990s) are being passed off as platinum even though it is white gold. ...
