Let me say that unlike the author I have never owned a Patek, and I admit that I have not taken the time to look up every watch referenced in the post. I am looking at the other end of the range - I am not concerned with the details of high-range Pateks but with the appeal of the more basic Patek models to a new buyer.
I am hoping soon to round out my modest collection with a simple gold watch. For me the movement is as important as the rest of the watch, so I want a simple and beautiful hand-wound movement and a sapphire caseback. This should be Patek's basic market, right? Well, no.
All the hand-wound Calatrava models seem to have the tiny 215 PS movement which is simply inadequate in the enlarged 36-38mm cases, despite Patek's visual tricks to try to disguise it. As far as I can see in this sector Patek simply do not have a watch to compete with (for example) Vacheron's Patrimonie or Lange's 1815.
I know Patek's reputation and love the idea of owning a Patek watch. At the moment, I can honestly say - with some disappointment - there is no Patek that really interests me at all.
I would love to see a Calatrava model in a 37-38mm size with a new manual movement in an appropriate size. Surely that is what Patek need to attract new buyers to the brand. Perhaps we will be surprised!
