The Big "IFs"

rolexdoc,

In your well reasoned and provocative post you state:  "IF it is s true that the new Patek the watches are expensive, made in very high numbers and are designed in a manner that is not so appealing it can be a recipe for disaster now and for ever."

Whether the big "IFs" are true I think is mostly a subjective matter.

1) Are new Patek watches expensive. Well, yes, they are unquestionably expensive (as are pretty much all luxury watches). I guess the real question is whether they are TOO expensive, taking into account all that makes owning a new Patek so desirable to so many? Are the prices sufficiently high to cause Patek collectors to stop buying current models? I wonder how Forum members would answer those questions.

2) The "very high numbers" is an interesting issue. Compared to Rolex, the overall numbers and numbers per model are quite small. Compared to vintage Pateks, the numbers produced on current Pateks, in general, are much higher. I guess the real question is whether the numbers are sufficiently high to deter Pateks collectors from buying a specific model because they feel the number produced makes it less appealing? Any thoughts?

3) The most controversial issue I would think is the very subjective issue of whether current Pateks "are designed in a manner that is not so appealing"? I wonder how Forum members would answer that question, particularly by comparing current designs to (a)discontinued modern models and (b) to vintage models.
