I’d say that’s a possible later service dial on the 3940. It could be very last of the series so some variations.
The different thicker font (later San serif font on checking no 5 and J for example) for the date is a typical tell tale sign. I would pass on this example and look for a better example with thicker lugs and hopefully unpolished case (look for untouched if you can with clear hallmarks) and an earlier original dial with the nicer font.
