Patek Philippe

Both are great watches!

I like the 5170P very much and you are right that it has a mesmerising dial and the diamond markers are very discreet. But for me personally, there is little competition if compared with a 3970G which I love. Firstly, it is the right size compared the the 5270R for example which is a great watch with probably the most attractive patina on its dial but at 41mm, it is a tad too large (for me anyway). I like my watches small, the smaller the better and I have little doubt that I am in a minority here. But see how the movement of the 3970G fills the case back. Yes, it is a bit on the thick side but if you choose the G, you are also choosing the rarest metal because more 3970Ps were sold than Gs due to the small price difference between the two.

I think 3970 remains good value while the 5170P is actually readily available and selling quite reasonably on the used market denoting that its RRP was perhaps on the steep side. Value to me is an important consideration when buying a watch and one can get an excellent Lange 1815 chronograph or even a datograph for a similar price as a Patek 5170. Lastly, I would like to say Patek is famous for its perpetual calendar chronograph and the 3970, 5970 and 5270 epitomises what Patek is all about.

All the best in your decision!
