Have a feeling the 3970...
The 3970 had it's time in the spotlight, and now it's dimensions and thickness, plus small face, work against it. Still, at around $60k for the 3970G it might be worth a look. Any more than 60 and i'd pass. The 5170p might be the better long-term hold, if you can get it priced right (haven't bothered looking at prices, yet know the 3970RG third edition in mint condition fresh service sealed, orig box/papers trades hands for around $80k).

I agree completely on the 3970. I find that I can make a checklist on a piece and it may check every box but at the end of the day it has to have some magic!

Good afternoon, Thank you for the responses on this. I found a mint 3970G with a black stick dial and I'm happy to report that I bought it! It should be another week before I pick it up so I'll save my impressions for then. Best regards
