Patek Philippe

Excellent review, Mark

To my mind, it is like comparing a Porsche 993 with a Porsche 997. The latter is superior from a technical standpoint, but it is the former that everyone wants.

I think you make many good points, but one stands out for me. The 5070 has made that leap to iconic status. The 5170 has not yet made that leap. Therein lies a huge difference. That leap is not something that many PPs have done in recent years. Very very few in fact. It is a leap of faith to think the 5170 will do so. It may do....but as of yet.

The key question is why has the 5070 become such an icon of the modern era. Well, I think you did a really good job of defining the differences. The Lemania movement was used in 5070 and 5970 and then stopped. That certainly adds to the watches appeal.

Nicolas points out what he argues as flaws. I know many people who see the flaws and see those flaws as adding to the attraction of the watch.

For me, when I reviewed my 5070P some time ago, i said the dial had that Mona Lisa effect....enigmatic? Well, maybe not enigmatic, but a factor X that is very hard to define. Those that have the watch will look at its dial and find very little that compares since.

Great review.....though like a few others here, I am firmly in the 5070 camp.
