Hello Chris,
The 5296 is a very nice watch. The think you'll really enjoy the sector dial, with it's subtle change in color (depending on how the light catches it; grey to silver, and silver to grey). The blued hands also add visual interest to the dial.
I personally would never dream of having this case polished (unless the watch had been severely damaged). Whether the watch is rhodium plated or not, would not matter, I still would not polish. I personally prefer the watch to be in it's natural state (I'm a bit of a purist that way).

Just be very, very careful. Actually, for me, I wouldn't want to try my hand at polishing. I'd rather take it back and have it serviced for that. one thing about white gold, and anyone can jump in with corrections, the white gold is rhodium plated. Theref...
My take-
I would not polish the watch myself with anything stronger than microfiber cloth. Your watch is (most likely) plated. Original strap is intended to compliment the hands; hard to find better

Thanks for the advise on not polishing - I guess I will have to curb my Stainless Steel based urges!??! The strap is tricky - I agree that the blue strap is meant to pick out the hands but this seems like 'over egging the pudding' to me. I have never seen...
