I'm not qualified to speak on this at all and just speculating...
But I imagine the trend would have increased with the development of the online secondary market. My guess is that after this, it would be easier for the average buyer to realize that holding box+papers increases value. Also, I think that as watches have become more expensive, the boxes have gone up a bit in quality, incentivizing people to keep them.
