I don't think it has ever become a trend
it bores down more to each individual. My dad is 85 and he has kept everything in order for over 70 years. Some people are just not very organised or do not have the space at home to keep the large watch boxes. I keep everything even the paper bag that the watch comes in and the plastic covering the watch. OCD? Nah, not at all - I just appreciate my possessions possibly a lot more than I should but then again they give me so much joy!

Roger, I think this trend is quite recent ( late 90's early 2000's ) for a good reason...
If you look at the vintage boxes, most of them are not very exciting. Small, in cardboard or in plastic, well... Now they are big, so called luxurious, in wood... The brands are working on their packaging, so the buyer doesn't want to throw it. I for one ...
I always try to find a complete watch . I collect watches for 30 years and still own the first watches I bought back then (full set)
Maybe like you its my OCD but i love to have everything complete and i store my boxes always careful so if i want or need to sell a watch at some point it will be a full set.
Perhaps the growth of counterfeiters had something to do with it.
With so many fakes out there being able to trace and confirm authenticity with the manufacturer might have played a role although papers can also be counterfeit.
As an engineer, isn't provenance and evidence better than the watch alone?
