I'm not sure, but I've heard that the leap year (1-4) circle has fine concentric engine-turned lines engraved into it, which makes it appear a little darker than the rest of the dial.
Hello everyone, I’m considering buying a 3940J from 2005. The watch appears to be in good condition and is being offered by a reputable seller. One detail I’d like your opinion on is the sub-dial coloring, which looks grey to me. I know it’s normal for th...
Although I haven’t pulled the trigger. Here are two j examples I tried on. I hope this helps you. This one I tried on last month at Bucherer in NYC. Asking 75K $. Naked watch. This one I tried on in Sardinia last August. If I recall correctly asking was 7...
I’d say that’s a possible later service dial on the 3940. It could be very last of the series so some variations. The different thicker font (later San serif font on checking no 5 and J for example) for the date is a typical tell tale sign. I would pass o...
The asking for the 3940 has really shot up but whether a lot of these are actually moving is another thing. Many are over polished watch only pieces not collectors set by any stretch. The desirable ones are first series or second series unpolished conditi...
It’s very hard to find a good example on an early series that’s complete for less than 80-90k USD these days. Whether they are moving is a different story.
Thanks for all the great feedback. I added a few pictures below, it would be great to get your view, highly appreciated I’ll dig deeper on the dial, if a potential service one. Thanks ...
Ive been trying to find a moderately worn 3940 3 series for a while in gold and haven’t even seen a good one pop up. One was in NY with some major issues with the dial, and another is in Europe but has a swapped dial…
Thanks, how would you check the dial? I checked on forums and I think that for being a 2005 3rd series, it has all the required features (San serif,Swiss aligned)
A typical problem with many 3940 subdials. Those without the problem have a higher value - and will most likely be more desirable in the future as well.
just love the 3940. Perfect size, thin, slips under my dress shirts just a fantastic piece. Pull the trigger- you WILL NOT regret it! It’s a beautiful example 😊👍
Unfortunately you give us a good example of one which is getting neither a green nor a red light… I can only give you my opinion… The case front side seems to be in normal condition, obviously polished more than once but not a no-go for the lugs are not t...
