It actually depends on one's wrist size!
The smaller wristed folk like myself may be partial to the 3970 with its 36.5mm diameter while the larger wristed folk may prefer the 40mm 5970. Saying that one might argue that the 5970 is more balanced since the 13mm height in the 3970 might appear too thick for a 36.5mm watch.

What was made by a few companies years ago are made by many now. It reminds me of the U.S. Olympic basketball team which dominated the world years ago, and then the rest of the world caught up. Yes, they win gold, but the competition is much fiercer.
