I also have to agree with you in regards to your conclusions between the Calatrava Cross and the more traditional tang buckle.
And on a side note if its not too much of a personal question, but which age bracket do you fall within.
It;s just that I was intrigued by your "Father & Grandfather" observation.

The cross is too big and flashy
I find the calatrava cross clasp to be a little too flashy. I prefer the more discreet look of the chevron clasp. They both fit exactly the same, the only difference is the part of the clasp that shows.
