Watches and Wonders part 1 : 6105G Celestial Sunrise and Sunset

Few pieces each year truly stop seasoned collectors in their tracks—but the Patek Philippe 6105G Celestial Sunrise and Sunset did exactly that for me. After years of following the evolution of Patek’s astronomical complications, I didn’t expect to be this genuinely moved. And yet, here we are—this might well be my favorite release of the year.

What Patek has achieved with the 6105G is not just technical mastery, but emotional resonance. Yes, the headline features are remarkable: a multi-layered dial with independently rotating discs depicting the night sky as seen from Geneva, the orbit and phases of the Moon, and—most strikingly—the addition of sunrise and sunset indications. But beyond the specifications, it’s the coherence of it all that impresses me. Nothing feels forced. This is complexity with purpose.

The sunrise and sunset display, adjustable for seasonal time shifts, is a quiet revolution in wristwatch astronomy. It transforms the piece from a celestial map into something far more personal—something that connects the wearer to the rhythm of the natural world. That, to me, is where this watch transcends being merely impressive and becomes deeply meaningful.

Visually, I find it equally compelling. The modernized aesthetic, housed in a bold 47mm lug-less case, paired with an integrated composite strap, signals a confident step forward for Patek Philippe. It’s contemporary without losing its soul—no small feat for a maison so rooted in tradition.

In a landscape where “grand complication” can sometimes feel like a race for more, this piece reminds me why I fell in love with horology in the first place. It’s not just about what a watch can do—it’s about how it makes you feel. And the 6105G, quite simply, is mesmerizing.
