Patek Philippe

well...

You dont seem to have a very exact notion of what You are looking for.You say You are looking for a simple, honestly made ,understated watch.

Well, almost all top brands offer this kind of timepieces.

I would suggest first to read about all those brands, their history, their philosophy and so on.There are a lot of fine books about wristwatches on the market. And the history of brands like A.Lange,Patek,Breguet,VC etc is very fascinating to read(the most fascinating and thrilling history for me still is that of Breguet in the 18/19th century),

After You got a notion about all those brands, take a look at their current collection.

This said,a PP as first "real" watch certainly is an excellent choice, but You should really do some homework before just buying a watch,as a timepiece is something different from a pair of shoes or trousers,it is nice to know why one bought exactly this piece and not something different,to have an emotional connection with this thing on one's wrist,to have some knowledge about the company that built it and so on.

PP has a very long tradition,in some way it succeeded Breguet as nr.1 in the mid 19th century and has been holding this position rather continuously until now. Their philosophy is good old Swiss watchmaking tradition, their design rather conservative, craftmanship in Pateks is beyond any doubts, collectors love "rare" Pateks and therefore PP watches keep their value rather good, better than most other brands(mind that simple standard pieces nevertheless will loose significantly in value,so please forget all those things about watches as "investment"!),service is good if Your AD can do it himself(complicated watches however often must be sent to Switzerland and repairs there can take endless(many, many months or a year for really complicate pieces)-but other brands are not better with service times),so there are a lot of good reasons to buy one smile

kind regards,

lutz
