I can only speculate - maybe the steel version came with the (cheaper to produce) stamped dial and the other metals had raised enamel? Patek did this with other references as steel was the cheap version.
My 570J from 1956 has a Swiss dial as well, and raised enamel.
I find the raised enamel letters very important as they add a lot of complexity to the dial. Also, I feel, there are more white gold models in the market than J or R. P is very rare, of course.
