This wasn’t a photo contest
It was an open annual juried show at a museum.
There were no categories so painting sculpture print making photography mixed media were all mixed together.
All entire were physically represented at the museum

It was an open show in any medium. It won the grand prize and really gave me a confidence boost. ...
It looks a little familiar... in any case it's good to have a[nother] look...
The colours stick out in my mind... Photo 'contests' are always a mixed bag... mostly promoting some known or hidden agenda and so much depends on the selection of judges... Great that you photo was selected, better still that it's a wonderful image ;-) C...

The judges were curators of the museum.
I haven’t Entered any online shows, but I hear what you are saying and largely agree.
