Richard Mille

RM011 in titanium with a titanium bracelet.

This has been a long time coming! But as always, Richard wanted it to be just right before launching it. Not one for doing anything by half, Richard tried a number of variations before settling on this. For anyone who can remember the collaborative projects with Philippe Stark in the mid-noughties, the second watch (in 2007) from the collaboration (a solid construction RM011 on bracelet) looks very familiar when compared to the Richard Mille watch and bracelet offered at SIHH. So the design has an outstanding pedigree. However, to my mind and my eye, Richard improved on the design to make it more comfortable; more amenable to any wrist of any size.

I was given the watch to try on while at SIHH. I have to say that despite looking like some form of science fiction bracelet that will detonate if you try to leave the surroundings of Palexpo, it is remarkably light and comfortable on the wrist. It also looks fantastic and judging by the number of ‘likes’ on my Instagram account, this is a sure fire winner.

The bracelet is not a simple run of the mill joining metal bits together! Oh no! For this bracelet, Richard machines each component (which is more complex than any other watch bracelet) out there. Then, once each component is machined and finished, there is the arduous and labour intensive process of piecing it all together. Such complexity does not come at a reduced price. Further, because of the time it takes to construct one of the bracelets, it comes supplied with its very own RM011 watch. You can only buy the whole set. Not a bracelet separately. But try it on the wrist… You are going to love the way it looks, and in keeping with Richard Mille’s mantra about comfort on the wrist, it is going to feel part of you before you know it! It killed me to take this one off! Because I had NOT left Palexpo with it!
