So close, so different. The size, the proportions of the case, the bezel, the dials the bracelets, the crown guards, these are essential differences, but still, there is an unmistakable air de famille, a relationship which jumps to the eyes.
Even more with the ceramic bezel.Here again, even if the hues are far from being the same.
That is the strong point with Rolex. The link between the original and the modern is strong. It always have been the same.

The new ones starting with the Super Case are all wrong proportionally. Look at that picture Nico posted. The 6542 is stripped down to its essence. No fat. No fluff. The new GMT-Master is so bloated compared to it. It's like the 6542 is a fit and trim ath...

Modern Rolex is perfect for the Instagram, look-at-me, era... Maybe "inelegant" is too strong, though.
Very interesting feedback, Echi. The reason why I was in " shock " when I discovered the new GMT MASTER in 2007 is the large lugs.
These large lugs make a big difference not to say contrast between the case and the bracelet. That detail didn't please me, and still causes me some trouble... I think your point may be a tad different if the lugs were much slimmer. It is hard to believe ...

IMHO, Rolex manage to keep the link of their design very well, but the essence has shifted over the years. Maybe because now days it's considered as a luxury piece/ jewelry hence the bigger size & more blingy looks. While at the beginning, it was designed...
6542 wins hands down...
still the Black dial BLRO WG stands far ahead of the new Blue dial - i think the contrast goes well with the Black... but then 6542 is the king - undisputable charm ! Best, mahesh.,
