My BLNR that I purchased earlier this year has a crown with 3 dots on the bottom.
This means it’s 300m rated crown? When I compare the case back to my Sub, the caseback of the Sub definitely protrudes an extra 1-2mm further than the GMT.
Why is the GMT II only water resistant to 100 meters?
While throughly testing Batman in 2 meters of water (which is probably as deep as it will ever go), I was thinking about why the GMT II is only waterproof to 100 meters while the Sub is rated for 300? They look externally identical including same thicknes...
It's just for marketing purpose and to prevent cannibalization of the portfolio.
It has the same crown and a slightly flatter caseback. The crown is responsible for the water resistance while the caseback will just dent in earlier.
3 dots on the winding crown
I thought if the crown has 3 dots the watch is 300m waterproof , a line under the logo (crown) is only 100m The new Pepsi gmt has 3 dots ....
Your GMT has a Duolock Crown and is truely 100 m water resitant
Where all new GMT of this year have a Triplock Crown, that are "fake" 100 m water resistant only. A Triplock Crown supposed to be 300 m safe, as you mentioned. Why it is like this, is something Rolex will only be able to tell.
Casual divers dive no more than 40m I guess 60 in Euro zone 100 is more than enough.
So I tend to agree with the marketing / cannibalization issues. Dive watches vs GMT two markets two buyers.
The triple lock crown
The sub has the triple lock crown. Three dots on the crown. The new GMTs I believe are water resistant to 300m.

Yes, the watch itself is water resistent up to 300 meter.
The case probably would dent in a bit earlier.

3 dots are sign of the trip-lock system that pertains to the crown.
Even though to the eye ceramic GMT Master ll and Sub C look the same, the thickness of the internal walls of the watch are different. Sub has more metal, more meat on the inside and that's why it can sustain further depth. BLNR has 3 dots as well, meaning...
