I like the way you put your point across. I see the Deepsea as a step forward and not backward;an amazing feat of engineering as compared to the original which IMO would look a bit awkward today.
If the size is disturbing, it's still conservative and very wearable as compared to some Pams (341,300)?
Anyway,isn't some controversy and craziness from a brand like Rolex rather stimulating?

The danger of comparing an icon...
... to anything else, is that an icon will always wins as it has already the icon status. But put that on the side, the deepsea is an exciting watch, bold, daring, powerfull.... you name it. If i had to choose, i'd go for the deepsea or a really nice vint...

Interesting and disturbing.
Unless it is interesting BECAUSE it is disturbing! Take them separately, they have their own interest and charm. Put them side by side, and the thickness of the Deep Sea is as impressive as it can be disturbing, compared to the more coherent size of the 1...
