What to make of this Rolex
So what’s your take on this Rolex coming up for auction? I would say personally the patina has gone a teensy weensy bit too far, but that’s just me. Credit Phillips. ...
Would you buy a rusty car that doesn't run or need overhaul? Maybe if its got good bones or chassis but this....
The dial, hands are all rusty....I don't even know the movements...If this one goes crazy on price, I think this is again one of the crazy, easy money that buys "bragging rights". Not for me, sorry but of course, I don't have those crazy, easy money, lol
First, the bracelet looks weird...
...second, I have NEVER understood the love of 'tropical' dials. We used to call those 'damaged.'

Personally, I don’t mind Tropical and in many cases think it adds to the beauty of the watch. Personally I think this dial is owed a new term... tropical was it’s previous life. This is, as dhendolan says, its Hiroshima!

There are a few really cool DD’s in the catalog. Stone dials. Always found them really appealing.

The patina seems too uniform given how severe it is, therefore it appears contrived. Someone will buy it because he expects some other greater fool to buy it later. Not sure if this is peak vintage Rolex insanity, but to me it’s emblematic of that zeitgei...
Do Roelx dials from this period originaly have coating, that is over everything; text, emblem, indecsies and even phosporus dots?
Havent seen anything like this before, so must think what to say, but I dont know id dials should have such and layer over all, that can react like this? Or is there always surface protective layer, that is applied after dial is othervise 100% ready
