Rolex

Well, I surely love mine...

Looks like there is not too much love out there for the modern interpretation of the Prince.
Not quite sure why that is the case, as I absolutely love mine, which is the red gold model.
I got it a couple of years ago, and  it was obviously not a hot seller back then either, since it was not too difficult to locate several dealers that had one in stock, and the price turned out to be quite negotiable, too.
Although most of my watches are round, I have a soft spot for other case shapes, like rectangular, cushion or tonneau, and the whole design of the Prince really spoke to me.
The case has some quite bold angles and an interesting interpretation of the well-known fluted Rolex bezels along the long edges of the rectangle.
The dial layout is very harmonious, with the sun burst pattern centered around the axis of the sub seconds hand, and the shiny black of the dial and the raised arabic numerals is nicely reflected by the simple stitchless black alligator strap. The idea of the sun burst pattern is picked up again on the back of the watch in the movement finish, this time centered around the balance wheel. And the rectangular shape of the case is nicely complimented by the shape of the double folding clasp.
While it is true that the case is a bit on the thicker side, the watch still wears very comfortably, due to the fact that front of the case is quite substantially curved and the thickness therefore decreases towards the ends of the case.
Overall, the watch is absolutely capable of working well as a very elegant dress watch, and in my opinion combines an elegant art deco attitude with a somewhat more flamboyant edge.
On top of the interesting design, the  watch has a super-smooth manual wind movement which is a joy to handle, and therefore it is a regular part of my rotation of office-wear watches (and has collected a few minor scratches over time, which it wears well).
And on some admittedly rarer occasions, it even performs nicely in a more casual setting with just jeans and a t-shirt.

Bodo
