Ref. 43999, Grand Seiko Self-Dater, from 1964
Just arrived today. Thrilled with the condition. I was told the dial is original. It looks it. Hopefully the experts can opine. I was surprised that the date is a quickset. My recollection based on my transitional Rolex 16808 Submariner is that Rolex didn’t come out with the quickset date until around 1981? A really neat reference. Ahead of its time.

Huge congratulations 🎉🎊🎈 Quick set dates are quite common in Seiko’s and Grand Seiko’s from the era - some even had instant jump mechanism already, albeit that seems not to have been very common 😊
They have always been selective in terms of what they do and what they can industrialize easily 👍🏻
A bit like the Japanese car industry - don’t be first or the most exciting / experimental, just use what works well and what you can manufacture easily at scale and do this well. People might hate me for the comparison even if it is meant as a compliment ...
