TAG Heuer

Business Case Study in real time

I am keeping a very close eye on this. The moving parts I see here (no pun intended) is TAG Heuer's move to take over F1 sponsorship. They are an LVMH company, a group that has consistently taken moribund or at least boring brands, and given them a very sexy new lease on life. Just think of Rimowa or Birkenstock, for instance. Does it get any more boring?

LVMH will bring all (most) of their brands closer to F1, there aren't enough corporate TAG Heuer customers to fill the hospitality tents so the $150M a year will be used across their brand portfolio, though obviously they will us the watch brand as a primary driver.

So, what we are about to witness is either a Master Class in how to build a watch brand, or how to fumble an incredible opportunity. Introducing unobtainable (and collectible) pieces at the very top of the product range is standard fare. They will NOT go the Hublot route (their other prime watch brand) so I don't expect to see sapphire cases, or crazy fashion colors, I expect this will be more about performance and horology.

So stock up on those older Heuer models, and take a look at the existing limited editions like the V4. FYI, I am not kidding when I say I bought my Union Glasshรผtte last week (see image below) for that reason, it's fun to have a crazy alternative to the Monaco when they will become a thing by next Watches & Wonders. I am excited to see what LVMH will do.
