Thanks. Yes, I have tried all the tricks. Most work fine with AF fine adjustment, but a few don't. I have tried the service center with three different examples of the same model with the body, and essentially they told me to give up as the lens is an old... 

105 DC lens is something that doesn't work well even with that. D3 users don't complain about the combo with the lens, so I assume it is D700 f/w. I bought and sold three example of the same lens

I take a lot of pix professionally with my ancient D70, but am looking to upgrade soon. Still takes great photos and has been a real workhorse. The D700 might be overkill for my uses and wonder how much real-world difference there is between that and a D7... 

With ample light in day time, very generally speaking, there wouldn't be much change. The difference with the body is the low-light sensitivity. Suppose you are to take photos in the party or barbecue after dark, or concert. You would be a lot more fortun... 

Since I avoid using flash as much as possible, and then really more for fill. Since I shoot only in camera RAW and am pretty handy with Photoshop, I get pretty good results from my dinosaur. Good lenses and, as you say, the brain behind the camera, make a...
