The differing types of wood, though, aren't softer than maple - they're stiffer.  Or, more precisely, tightly grained.  If you look up 'tightly grained wood' the list would include every type Bob has made.  Mun ebony in particular is so dense it doesn't float.  Interestingly enough, mun* also finishes exquisitely right off the lathe.  


My sense is that these dense shaft woods make ideal platforms (or sinks) for soft tips.  I can make bank shots that would make a pros head spin.  And I'm no pro.
