A lot of tech companies in the San Francisco area are able to have most of their employees work from home. Thus, many of the offices are closed. Due to the fact that so many offices are closed, this becomes a salivating target for opportunistic bad eggs who will break into such buildings and help themselves to things that are normally in an office. Thus, many buildings are boarded up. Also, there was a massive looting episode in Union Square, where the overwhelmed police did a poor job dispersing the looters. Thus, looters destroyed many stores; there are YouTube videos showing how police drove down Post Street, the looters scatter like cockroaches, then the police never quite stop their patrol vehicle and once their vehicle is half a block away the looters come back like cockroaches to continue looting. Many stores were heavily damaged and will require extensive remodels that will take months to complete. While these stores are remodeling, they're often boarded up as well.
