Kubrick's a notable, for . . .
. . . sure. Paths of Glory is a favorite. But his directorial skills, in my estimation, are of a conservative nature. His films are compelling, but it's hard to claim any as pure cinematic art save for 2001.
When critics are studying our era a thousand years from now, it's my sense that Lean's epics will be considered the most compelling of all as they convincingly portray historical events. His canvas was the broadest and truest of all directors. That's why he's my candidate as all-time great.
Not to be confused with personal favorite, of course. That would be Del Lord.
