On Tuesday I welcomed into the family a watch I have quite literally wanted, waited, and wished for the LONGEST.

15 years ago while clicking through every link on the Timezone.com Basel tab seeing the new releases, I clicked on the link of a funny “brand” (this is how I thought of everything at the time) called Sarpaneva and his new release of the Korona K3 Red Moon and I can vividly recall saying to myself out loud, “WHOA!”😳🤯

I had never seen anything like it and immediately did my googles to see if I could find his website. At the time IIRC he had two dealers in Finland and one in Japan. The watch was ~$18,000 and I knew for a fact I could never own such an expensive and esoteric watch. But man oh man did I want it!!!!

Fast forward 7 years when I walked into Tim Jackson’s store Passion Fine Jewelry for the first time. He was a nice guy and his store only carried Indies. They were neat to look at but I had to ask him, “Does anyone ACTUALLY buy these things??”. He explained what Independent Watchmaking was and how (certainly at that time) there was a level of patronage that factored into people’s decisions as why to buy. I left that day without a watch, but a seed was planted into my head. As the years passed on, I found myself on Purists.com aka WPS clicking less and less on the posts pertaining to my favorite mainstreams (Lange, IWC, Panerai, etc.) while clicking and consuming every post covering the Indies. I had never stopped thinking about that Sarpaneva but my newly discovered love of Independent Watchmaking all of a sudden poured rocket fuel on my obsession, or better said, my conviction to own a Sarpaneva one day.

Fast forward again to Sunday where I discovered a K3 Northern Stars which was very much to my taste and for a price I could justify given my 15 year odyssey with the K3. With one phone call to the nice gentleman selling the watch I was able to reserve it, and an hour later of making sure I wasn’t crazy I pulled the trigger. Two days later it was on my wrist and I’m utterly thrilled with my decision.

A fun side note- Sunday when I bought the watch was, yep… a Full Moon🌝. Coincidence??? I think not!😉
