So after posting a few weeks ago I went ahead with the purchase of a lovely rose gold version of the 1815 annual calendar. I absolutely love it! As mentioned in my previous post. I had an IWC Portuguese 7 days for many many years and then it was unfortunately stolen a few years ago. Ever since, I have never had a leather strapped piece in the collection. A bunch of bracelets. Daytona, sky dweller, OP, Aquanaut and so on. But I still yearned a bit for a “dress” watch which could perform casual and dress much like my Portuguese did. Although I do admit the Portuguese is barely even a dress watch at 14 mm thick.
Anyway, my eye had been tempted by an 1815 up/down to replace the Portuguese with an upscale rendition. Then I came across the annual calendar and was completely smitten! My heart had to have it. Seriously. After annoying my AD for about two years checking and testing dress watches. Reverso, Patrimony, Portifino, Fifty-six. Nothing tugged at the “I must have this in my life” heart strings.
Then the 1815 struck hard.
I then spent a few weeks just double checking across the board that nothing in that price range seemed better. Patek Annual calendars. While nice. Just didn’t do it for me. The movements old (324 derived) and similar to my basic 5167 movement. (Of course the are modules on top but still) plus the moonphase on Patek’s are so… well. Stencilled. Not much artisanship is injected into them. The 5205, modern and fairly large. 5146 nicely sized but… oddly cramped. 5396. Not bad but no emotion inducing activity.
Then reading people commenting the 1815 AC is Manual wind. Okay. But I have a dozen watches. All my automatics run dead all the time as well. If my Patek AC runs dead. I have to poke the date pusher (hopefully only that pusher but it may be more) to get things in line. The Lange AC? Push the button on the side the number of days you are behind and Bob’s your uncle. Happy days!
So needless to say. Damn I love this watch!
Thanks for reading!
