Well, okay, perhaps that's an exaggeration. But I do recall that "disappointing" was the initial reaction from many folks who saw the Zeitwerk Striking Time in the metal when it was first introduced last year.  Figured I'd take a chance, though ... and it turned out to be a good decision -- zero regrets (and at night, when it's quiet, I can hear its clear, pleasant "ding" from far across the room)!

One of the pieces that I have not had the chance to see in metal. 

Because the sound is so nice that we'd love to hear more than one ding, and why not, a dong, too.



But the most important is not what we think, but what you feel. And seeing you happy with this Zeitdingwerk makes me happy.

it makes the watch look very technical

... when I first saw this watch in the metal. Although it may not fit the "tool watch" definition in function, it really does in form. It has the appearance of an elegant tool watch, and of course it's quite heavy.

I don't see why anyone should hate it. It should provide quite a bit of aural pleasure as well as visual, not to mention sensual!

I love it. And while I suppose we would all love an ALS MR or GS, this combination is truly gorgeous .  So until then, enjoy this spectacular time piece.

I too wasn't crazy about the design when I first saw it, but I am beginning to change my mind and I particularly like the platinum versions.  Wear it in good health!

could you please explain when it chimes..? Is it on the hour, quarters too..? Can it be turned off..?

I'd love to know some more about it.

It chimes on the quarter hour. The hammer on the right side of the dial strikes its resonator at xx:15, xx:30, and xx:45. The hammer on the left side of the dial strikes its resonator at xx:00. The resonating mechanism on the right produces a higher pitch than the mechanism on the left. Specifically, if you were to hear the right mechanism chime 3 times in rapid succession and then hear the left mechanism chime immediately afterwards, it would sound like the first four notes of Beethoven's Fifth ("da-da-da-dum"). The pushbutton at the 4 o'clock position disables/enables the chiming mechanism. When you push the button to enable it, you hear the hour (left) chime once. It has a 36-hour power reserve. Winding feels VERY different from an 1815, a Saxonia, a Lange 1, etc. -- it's very stiff, loud, and crisp to wind.

... than a Petite Sonnerie, because it strikes only once on the hour. It does not strike the number of hours on the hour.

From a practical, functional perspective, this is WONDERFUL, because the single chime is noticeable without being disruptive or distracting (which it would be if it were repetitive).

the wonderful chime...and like you say just one chime is just nice, imagine 12 going off at lunchtime in a meeting..!!  And the fantastic digital display.

Yes a lot of people (including me), was not convinced by the striking feature of the watch... but it remains a Zeitwerk and it is enough to make it very desirable!

A very nice watch!  Congratulations!  Would love to hear the dings and dongs when I'm working on something so intensely I forget the passage of time.

It's really not my thing -- seems a lot of work for the occasional "dit" or "dot."  Seems you find it appealing, though -- which is all that matters!  If we all liked the same pieces the world would be a boring place indeed...

Where can you get a sonnerie watch for that money?

A sonnerie watch that is as discreet in time telling?

It is not in the slightest a watch to hate ... only not to undertsand.
