Second, for your first Patek that is some choice!

It's nice to see some photos of the silver/ white and black together. I agree I think the white is the better choice here, the black subdials look a little too big for me no overall it does seem to miss the pulsation scale around the outside.

The pulsation scale seems irrelevant unless the owner is in the medical field. Isthe5070 a fly back?

the scale is not here as a "tool" but as a decoration.

You don't seem to like it and that's a personal choice of course.

But you have to consider that some people may like the way it looks.

Furthermore, this scale is refering to the first chronographs the brand has created in the 30's/40's. It is much more than a usefull element.

I guess without scales (whether it is a Telemeter or a Tachymeter, which are not that usefull either), the watches are much simpler and very well looking if one is looking for something more airy.

But I don't think there is an absolute rule of good taste here.

it was my first PP also and a very special acquisition for me.  I don't agree that most members would pick the black dial, the white version with the pulsations scale and breguet numbers make for a unique watch.

i chose also 5170 white dial. While I feel Black is nice, the white is sublime! Especially with the scale reference.

I'm preparing an article about this version of the 5170G and think it is a very important Patek chronograph.

I prefer this version too because of the pulsometric scale and the smaller subsidiary dials. Even if the black dial one looks very nice too and is destined to be worn in a more sporty way.

ive always been disappointed in the opinion of most others on th 5170. It's mostly disregarded and seen as inferior to the 5070. I don't think it's just because I have smaller wrists but to me a classic watch is not 42mm, it's just too much. I much prefer the more simple, more subtle 5170. I hope to pick one up myself at some point.

Congratulations on your first Patek and a wonderful one at that! Pulsation dials are historically a prized rarity in Patek chronographs.

The black dial is beautiful and finally Patek got it right by using leaf hands to go with the Breguet dial, which to me is a noticeable improvement over the baton (sword) hands.

A black Breguet dial with white gold applied Breguet numerals is a striking combination, BUT by my count there are 7, yes 7 black Breguet (white gold numerals) dials in white metal watches in Patek's current line. This greatly (to me) reduces the desirability of this spectacular combination - hence my use of the word "common". IMHO Patek is beating this combination to death - there can be too much of a good thing.

It's a lovely chronograph with a superb movement. I haven't seen the black dial version yet but I suspect the pulsograph white dial version you have has a tad more "vintage" charm.
