Patek Philippe

Personally I like 5970 a bit more due to its contemporary size.

However, 3970 is nothing less than a grail PP if you likes its more vintage size.

3970 - Because I never got into the 5970

I bought a 5270 a few years ago, intended on looking for a 5970 but the prices were very high, so 5270 it was.

I have tried on the 5970 extensively, on one occasion I tried it with the 3970.

For me, the 3970 was effortlessly more charming in gen 2 guise. It truly is a magnificent piece of watchmaking and the smaller case appeals to me.

The 5970 is trying hard and does get everything right, its virtually faultless but there is just something about the charm of the 3970 that really does it for me, perhaps its owning a 5270, that smaller, vintage size...

So neither are an incorrect choice, it perhaps comes down to wrist size, preferences and what else you own.

3970, albeit chunky, all day long.

3970 is the original…

…and 5970 just a later copy with a larger case. The 5970 case is also too large for the dial (they needed to expand it to fit the larger case). The 5970 case is also too big for the 3970 caliber.

A preference of some for a larger watch taken aside - the 3970 is superior. And one should always remember that fashion trends come and go. Larger watches were trending for the last years. 36mm will be the new old trend smile

Both are beautiful watches.  For me, I went with the 5970 because of the rectangular pushers, the overall size and the balance of the dial.  To me, it has a very classic look.  Honestly... is there a wrong decision?

3970 for me..

as it wears better and more classic vintage though it would be very close. An early series 3970 would be very special.

This is an interesting topic to me

And one that I am actively thinking about.

I tried in the 3970 several times.

While it’s beautiful and I love the pump pushers, I find it too thick.

I’ve been obsessed with the 3940 for a while. I’ve tried it on many times. While I love the design, I just can’t pull the trigger due to the 36mm size. I’ve tried 5140 and 5327 - while I find these beautiful I still can’t get 3940 off my mind. So I’m kind of torn.

3970 versus 5970 is a comparison I have given considerable thought to. What I am about to write is not an assessment of which I think is the “better” watch (whatever that means).

It is merely and only my personal preference. 3970 clearly has the DNA of 2499/100 (4th and final series). 2499 is regarded by many as not only the GOAT Patek, perhaps the GOAT watch by any brand. The 3970 case aesthetically is basically a slightly smaller version of 2499. The dial is quite similar. And the 3970 is much more practical and user friendly with all 4 calendar functions (including the moon) being quick set. With no tachometer scale, for a very complicated watch, the dial is open, uncluttered and the watch is very attractive and  elegant. So what is there not to love? Actually nothing. It is a fantastic watch.

That said, with the standard dial, compared to 5970 I find it a little on the dull side (a blasphemous statement surely 😊). On the other hand some  of the special dials 3970s have the pop and excitement that for me is missing in the standard dial 3970s. I deeply want to love 3970 more than I do, but I can’t get there. At one point I had both 3970 and 5970, but I found that I never wore the 3970 once I acquired 5970. Obviously this is merely a matter of personal taste, but 5970 for me is about as perfect as a watch can be. I feel an excitement and appreciation every time I wear it.

I can certainly understand why so many collectors, perhaps most, prefer 3970, but try as I might to convince myself otherwise or at least to love each equally,  I much prefer 5970.

I agree with you..

There is something special abt the case.. it’s rather strong and sporty.. the 3970 and 5970 abt both thick watches ~ 13mm.. the 40mm case balances it out perfectly.. the only complain I have is the date ring eats into the minute track.. setting the time then is abit tricky by referencing the outer most 1/5 chronograph seconds track

I would like to add that the 2499 doesn’t have leap year indication, which makes it impossible to set

Yes, setting the calendar functions on pre 1985 PCs and PCCs is very challenging.

The crown is a bit small compared to the case, but it's so beautiful.

Chk

Thanks for sharing your viewpoint. Interesting comment on the crown. Something I hadn’t given any thought to,

Having owned the 3970

I think if I have the choice, I would pick the 5970. The reason is that the 3970 size feels small for my wrist, and the 5970 fits much better. However, I own the 5270g, and here's a pic of it beside the 5970j. Both have their merits.

Thanks for sharing the side by side comparison photo. Great to see them together and to compare and contrast. Yes, both certainly have their merits and both superb. Can’t go with either.
