The story

It all started in the 1990s, when I came across a photograph in a magazine: a man on a bicycle, dressed in effortless Milanese summer casual. It wasn’t the clothes that held my gaze, but the watch on his wrist—a Nautilus 3700. That was my first encounter with the Nautilus, and I fell for it instantly.
At the time, I wasn’t yet a serious watch enthusiast, but that single image sent me straight down the Patek rabbit hole. I wanted one desperately. In the pre-internet era, however, information was scarce, availability even scarcer, and for a university student, it was simply far too expensive.
Fast forward about ten years. When the 5711—and its asymmetrical sibling, the 5712—were launched, the excitement came rushing back. By then, I had just started my business, and once again, they remained out of reach. My watch world was limited to pieces under USD 10,000, and the Nautilus remained a distant dream.
Today, with my business having grown, I finally felt it was time to pursue the watches I truly wanted. Over the past two years, I’ve gone on something of a watch-buying spree—but with intention. Rather than chasing the latest references, I chose to go back to the pair that first reignited that original excitement. That’s why I settled on these examples from 2008–2009: the watches that once felt unattainable, and that ultimately defined my journey as a collector.
