5970G is a 'better' watch than a 5004R in term of wearability and beauty?
Obviously not the complication bit.
I just need you guys to 'stop' me from trading my 5970G to a 5004....Help
I love both watches but can't really go for both since the 5004 is now priced so high.
Someone please wake me up with your wise advise
The only 3 downside I can think of about 5004 is 1) VERY EXPENSIVE 2) Small and Thick 3) Fragile for daily wear
As for 5970G downside .....1) not as complicated as 5004 2) a bit 'common'
In my mind, I know 5970G is a better daily wear but just you guys to come knock some sense on me.

the credit card precipice because of the thickness of the case, relative to the width.

There are stories about the reliability problems from a certain batch of (mostly earlier) production, but I have not taken the time to substantiate these stories.

Keep the 5970; but still get the 5004. They are both very different. I think you will miss the 5970 too much.....

(sell me the PISA if you need a few extra $$$ for the split second Patek, hehe)

Totally differnt watches altogether. In my opinion most people today think the 5004 is too small, that aside the complications clearly seperate it from the 3970 & the 5970. The entrigue for me besides being an amazing piece is how few versions of Split Second Perpetual Calendar Chronos have EVER been made by PP. I love the 5970 but am a little miffed as to the sudden rocket in values but I beleive the 5004 will be off the charts in the next 5 years.

As far as I'm qualified to answer, if I had to choose an everyday watch (what I'd love a 5970 to be for myself) I'd keep the 5970.

I love that watch. It looks like a great companion.

If you're looking for the extreme Patek chronograph, go for the 5004, but be prepared to sell it for a 5959! 

Have you imagined a 5950 PC!

Seriously, keep your 5970, my friend, or you will regret it.

This is not that the 5004 is to avoid absolutely, but the 5970G is not to sell, IMHO.

This is, as Jerome perfectly said, a very nice and great companion, and even more elegant than the thick and small ( proportions are not ideal ) 5004.

But wait...Maybe PP will release a bigger 5004???

I really love both watches but I really think I won't wear the 5004 much since it is that thick , fragile and expensive.
As for the 5970G , I have no problem wearing it . Maybe that's one reason to keep it

I have both a 5970G and the 5004R. They are quite different in character. The 5970G feels more contemporary and is a more substantial "solid" watch on the wrist. The 5004 is more delicate or "fine" in design (at least to my eyes), and the dial is simply to die for. Fabulous..
People talk about the extra height, but frankly i don't notice it so much when wearing it. Good luck with your dilemma!!

For what little it is worth, 5970G is my favorite watch of any, period.  Well said above, this decision CL is not about buying the 5004, it's about not selling the 5970--that would be a mistake!

May I ask you what's the strap for that 5004R in your picture?
I know it's croc but how does one describeits scale. It is not regular scale , it has something vintage about it that I like

...it is the original strap from 1995. The older-type Patek one. Not sure they supply this one these days...most of the ones I've seen have larger scales.

IMO 5970 wears much better than 5004.

I understand that 5004 is 'more' complicated but it comes down to wearability.

You can get a 5970 later, any time any metal.. 5004 is 8 times rarer than 5970. (basing on % of sighting). In 2004, I have tried one 5004 on and the 36mm size is a forever classic. Even my wife could wear it. It was a 5004G with a 3970 dial. At that time I found it unappealing (and my wife was next to me..) so I passed it on.  I have been regreting it everyday, man!

BTW, what is special about Patek watches? It's fine polishing and the breath-taking skills in getting so many complications into one watch.

The 5004 is the acme. Perpetual calendar + a split seconds chronograph. When the big watch trend is gone, 5970 will look awkward and by then, you will never get a 5004.

 

GET IT WHILE IT'S TANGIBLE!

(I am still waiting for my 5004P after 2.5 years....:-(

40-42 will never be too big.

I won't say those extreme things like 50 or even 55 will stay forever but 42-43 will never be too big. This is evolution. Int 1940 they were 32-33 in the 1950's - 1960's 34-35  was normal till they 1990's 36 till 39 were the standard. Today they reached till 43.

Everything under 44 will always be good, I do'nt think they will be bigger in 2030 because our wrist has limits but a 42 mm does not look stupid on any wrist. 50mm is another story, this is a fad

I agree about choosing the 5004, however, the 5970 is not what I'd consider a large size watch, and it will not be readily available in the future because they're running out of movements.  In fact, I've heard (rumor) that the last run of yellow gold may actually be fewer pieces than the platinum for this reason. 

 

The 5970 can just as easily be worn with a beautiful bespoke suit as it can with your favorite jeans (it's that versatile).  In addition, it's a very handsome watch, and one that you will surely regret selling.

 

Now, if you hunger for a chrono/perpetual, in a warm color metal, why not try a 3970 with leaf hands.  It looks very similar to the 5004.  In fact, the 3970 (IMO) has a bettter overal balance, due to it's height to diameter ratio, then the 5004.

 

I too thought of getting a 5004, but asked myself, would I rather have a 5970G and 3970 2nd series or a 5004.  The answer was quite simple for me:
