Patek Philippe

A recent addition.....the 5056P is iconic (to me).  Now discontinued it is not commonly seen.   The slate grey dial, the size, the milky white moon, the Roman numerals, the luminous hands/numerals--all combine to make a well-executed package.  It also wears comfortably.

 

 

 

The annual calendar is a PP landmark (seemingly underappreciated by lovers of more complicated pieces).  Which annual calendar is your favorite?

Love the overall look. Very classy and elegant. And the cream dial adds a subtle diversion. The rose gold is good too, but the rose color enhances the cream dial more than I would l want it to, making it appear a little more yellow. Like your 5056, it is also easy to read... as my eyes continue to fail me with age.

My 5135R. I just love the shape of the case, the size and the annual calendar. Pardon my non-existent photo skills.

As I think that this is a complication which , well, how to say it in correct English, ...Stops half way in comparison of a perpetual calendar?

BUT, if I had to grab one, I'd go on the 5960P...

A stunning slate grey dial, much nicer in real than in pic, the first in house chrono movement from PP, and a nice size...

I read what you say & I mainly agree.

You mention that it is a complication that stops half way in comparison to a Perpetual Calendar, which is true.

But then again a PC is also very nearly double the price!!

I love my 5146J, though if I could of afforded another £18,000 then I probably would of gone for a PC though its one disadvantage is that it is smaller, which in turn IMO makes its harder to read.  

Half the way in terms of complications, Half the way in terms of price...
Of course you're absolutely right.
That's what disturbs me, as the price of an Annual Calendar,if more affordable than a PC, is still expensive.
So that's the reason of my doubts, which remains in one question:
Is it worth spending this amonut of money on an annual calendar?
Honestly, I don't think.
But I fully understand those who are very happy with!

I don't agree with you and here is why:

What do you have to do with an annual calendar that you don't have to do with a perpetual calendar?

Once a year (and no more) you have to set the date.

Then the magic of a perpetual calendar is superior, but the magic has to face another truth: the perpetual calendar has to be serviced at least every 5 to 10 years, or sooner than that sometimes. Exactly like an annual calendar I admit.

So I see the perpetual calendar like an ultimate calendar (specially in the 5207!  ) but on a daily basis the annual calendar brings nearly the same result for half the price.

When JLC (or PP) will produce a lubrication free perpetual calendar that will be serviced every 100 years, it will make more sense to me.

The PC is like a DBS (the car, not the watch) while the AC would be a Vantage V8! The DBS may be more prestigious, but does it give more pleasure than a smaller V8?

Don't take me wrong, I'd love to own and wear a PC, but a 5396W or R would make my day!

If I follow you, even a simple Date is as useful as a PC or an AC...As it gives you the date, and as you have to wind and set the hour each time you want to wear a watch you didn't wear for a long time...LOLOL

Ok, Ok, that is a lawyers's argument...LOL

But, in another way , we have to admit that the more the movement is sophisiticated and elaborated, the more we love it...

If not, we should spend our money on other things: Cars, Boats, Women ...LOL

And what does an annual calendar get you more than a simple calatrava with date?  A Calatrava you have to change at most once every two months.  And it takes about as much effort as pushing a chronograph button - a bit of "interaction" with a watch that many seem to enjoy. 

I would argue that with an annual calendar you are also buying "magic" rather than practicality, and, in that sense, it is only half the watch a perpetual is.

That said, I agree with the original poster, the 5056 is beautiful.

I also think the 5056 is the best of the annuals.  Love the roman numerals, sublime moon, and the power reserve is better than in the current lineup.  But alas it seems a bit small for my wrist.  Yours looks perfect however.

prefer the smaller watches as opposed to the large watch trend.  For that reason, Patek complicated watches are usually my choice (when affordable!).  Pateks tend to retain the smaller size and, especially, the thinness of the case which appeals to me.

It has the days of each month laid-out around the outer edge, so it compensates for 30 vs 31 day months. You just have to adjust it for february, which is how I understand an annual cal.
A Zoom in on the rim might make it make more sense:

You can see the days indicated for january and february, basically on a leap year, it's not quite right, on Feb 29, you bounce it back to Feb 28 again

Definitly a FANTASTIC AC!! According to Christies, there were only about 300 5056P's ever made during the years of its production...cool!

sure it was that limited.  Maybe someone else knows the number manufactured?

i have a pp5146 for over a year. it is larger than the perpetual, very  elegant and changed only once a year. i really enjoy my 5146j. thanks jgarcia570

If I had a Yacht like the one shown in the photo.

I wouldn't have to worry about a Annual or Perpetual Calendar. Because I would go straight onto - hopefully the waiting list for a 5970G
