a pre-owned 5146P for a 5980 NIB?

I usually don't ask these types of questions, but I'm really looking for opinions, maybe just for the conversation.

Although I find a chrono a more "useful" complication than the annual, I just don't like the Nautilus line.  Also the 5146 is one of my favorite small complications from patek.  I find it has the right size, it doesn't look old-fashioned, like it might at 35-36mm and I think the moonphase is a nice addition to the 5035 design.  I wish they had some easier adjustment system then that collection of buttons, but Patek is Patek....

The nautilus chrono will be important in the future. I always would prefer a chrono from the PP. The 5146 is nice, elegant if you like it. But a sporty chrono like 5980 is definitly "more watch". Just take a look at the impressive movement...

If you want a proper chronograph save up for a Lange Datograph.

I'm sort of surprised (and encouraged) that most would not trade the 5146P for the 5980. I thought it would be 90% YES. But I'm glad to see it is mostly NO, so far. Regarding 'why' I would possibly trade the 5146P--as usual, there is no good reason whatsoever--just that strange 'itch' for another watch. It is an absolutely gorgeous watch. And I will likely keep it... I just get the urge to trade or 'go new' far too often for my own good! thanks for all comments so far.

When I get the urge to trade a watch I put it away in a draw for a month. If I've not missed wearing it then it goes on the block. More often than not the watch is kept because I missed it. I had just gotten too familiar with it or took it for granted - shades of relationships here - and needed a fresh perspective to appreciate it.

With all the hype surrounding the 5980, a watch that's hard to get, I was expecting more people to vote for the 5980.

The 5146 is one of my favorite watches from Patek, and is a watch I plan to acquire in the future.

I would say that you should try to acquire a second watch such as the 5980, as this would really broaden your collection; a casual sport watch for casual and resort casual attire and a platinum annual calendar for informal and formal attire.

Being a big fan of perpetual and chronograph,personally i would think that it actuatly go down to the bottom line in collection again.What sort of person and the favouritism path you are heading...

Why many have asked to opt for Dato rather than trading your 5146p against 5980.If you are a serious collector of chrono i think they are right all the way.But for those just favouring chrono,i see no harm in getting 5980 as it might be a legandary watch one day,as this is the 1st in house by pp.Or they are same who opt for both Dato or 5980,its okay to make any choice....but ask yourself before making the decision.

With your cuurent situation,may i propose keep the 5146p and get the 5980 later.Own two world from the noble house of patek.

The Lange Datograph is a good recommendation Le Chef. However, there are some individuals who unfortunately don't appreciate it as much everyone else.

First of all, let me start off with the fact I love Lange watches. I simply adore Langes. However, given the Lange datograph vs the Patek 5980, I would actually still consider the 5980 simply because it's a 12 hour chronograph and from my understanding the Lange datograph is only a 30 minute chronograph.

The Lange Datograph is supposedly the watchmaker's choice watch. Among Lange employees, this is the watch they speak of most highly. Philippe Dufour supposedly has a Lange Datograph!

In conclusion, I like the Lange Datograph very much, however, I wanted to provide the rationale as to why some individuals choose the 5980 over the Lange Datograph; for me I simply prefer to have the 12 hour chronograph.

I for one love looking at the movement on the Datograph.

The back might not be able to tell time, but it sure is beautiful.

You can even do this with your watches that have Patek 240 calibers. As the micro rotor doesn't obstruct the view. Additionally, the 240 has superlative finishing (even among other Patek models).

This thread has helped me to appreciate my watch more. What could be better than that!? I repeat that I am quite surprised at the almost total NO's. I guess, while many of us like and want the 5980, still just as many seem to not take it quite as seriously as our lust for it suggests...

they are 2 very different watrches if you want a watch that says 'HEY LOOK AT ME' then go for the 5980, it's big it's bulky and personally i love it....the 5980 one day will become a collectors classic IMHO, if it isn;t already!!! some might say overpriced steel...but it's not the case you are buying it is the In house Patek Philippe chrono movement.....if this watch was platinum or gold etc.. it will be 2 times the price...look at a 5960P (ok it;s an annual calender as well but 2 x price)...anyway just my 2p worth...

I will go for the 5980.
I'm not a fan of annual calendar and I find its design quite bland.
I think 5980 will be a much appreciated watch in near future.
It really does look good in person.

I have always enjoyed looking at pics of your many dazzling watches, and I know we have a Simplicity in common... so I know you must have a certain appreciation of 'bland' in the finest and most classic sense. (As much as I love my Simplicity, and I do profoundly LOVE it, I can still concede that it is a very quiet... even bland watch, in terms of design alone... now its execution, soul, and story are a whole other thing, but I digress)

Now as for the 5146P being bland, funny, but here I disagree! I find it rather, well, sexy actually, especially the case curves and ebony-gray dial... I find it very contemporary, very metropolitan, with a splash of old world tradition... I rather fancy wearing it while drinking a nice Martini and chatting about brave new architecture or some publishing sensation in someone's fabulous city loft... but that never happens, so I just stare at it in my kitchen...

I've never being a fan of patek annual calendar and I don't think the dial is nice or sexy at all,
but that's really just my personal opinion.
3940 and 5050 are beautiful and sensual but then again, it's my personal view.
But between the annual calendar and the 5980, I will take the 5980 without hesitation.

Personally, I would not make that trade.

But - here is another option:  Why not the best of both worlds?  Get a 5960 - you have the in-house chronograph and an annual calendar!

I would not trade 5146P for a 5980... however, I would consider trading up for the new 5960R.
IMHO, part of the allure of 5980 is based on the "manufactured" mystique by PP that it's SS watch will hold better value over the long term. However, if you take that away, 5980 is really a very overpriced steel watch.
Thus, if you are seriously considering 5980 because you are looking for a chrono, then I would save up and trade up to the 5960R which combines the annual calendar function of the 5146 with the chrono of the 5980!

I like the casualness of it, the blue color dial, etc. But after some consideration, I think it would be better to add the watch than trade for it. I do like the 5960R in pics, but I doubt I will ever wear RG in real life. I'm a steel, plat. guy.

Between a 5980 or a 5146G as my next Patek, I just got the 5711/1A and absolutely LOVE it. Given the current economic climate and the reduced PP prices would it be more feasible for me to acquire a 5980 now rather then later when the prices increase again and the flippers wake from their winter slumber? It seems a 5980 is much harder to get than a 5146G?

harder than a 5146G for sure. The G models are usually in dealer's cases...
