Patek Philippe

I remember when I bought my 6000G I was very surprised a few weeks later to discover a color sketch of an Oris with an uncanny resemblance. I had wondered which had come first, who inspired who. Now years later I was so pleased to see the actual watch on the wrist of a collector friend. I couldn't resist to take a photo. Here now the perfect comparison.

Does anyone know the history here?

I shall be interested to see what the experts say!!

But a very nice watch! Always loved the Patek 5000 and 6000. The 6000 is among my favorite Calatravas.

Honestly the round watch with a date pointer is a very old and classic design, definitely not an Oris creation, and probably not a PP creation either!

These one are not the original chicken, neither the original egg!

... and it was produced back in the end of the 90s/early 00s.

But these 2 that you've posted do resemble each other to a larger degree, not just the date, but also the rail-like circle inside the dial and the arabic numerals. Hmmm.... thought provoking.... they probably come from certain vintage design back in the old days.

Now that you mentioned the similarities... may I post what I think are even more similar between a PP and an FM...

Here are another two that are quite similar in appearance.

There are really a number of near-identical "coincidences" out there!

I'm not pointing the finger at any manufacture, because some of these designs might be derived from very classic vintage models that I have never seen or heard of. Say for example, the PP and FM that i posted are both called "Chronometro"... surely that can't be a copyright breach as obvious as that so I'm thinking it might be a common design from a certain era.

But your Martin Braun vs PP are really intriguing too!

.... looking at the Roger Dubuis and the Patek 5078 dial, quite right, they are very very similar if NOT identicial.  MY thought is, Patek probably sold those dials to RD.  Dont forget, the Stern family used to sell dials, thats their specialty, if i am correct, Patek Philippe still make dials for other watch houses as a source of income. 

To me, it looks like the sub-seconds on the RD is closer to the bottom, or simply a larger subseconds. Either way, I think it's different. That's not to say that PP/Stern didn't make it though...
