So, you have to set the moonphase... It is not only once a month, Patrick, it is way much often.

Such a lovely pair...but the smaller one gets all the attention.
2011 was a generous year in terms of new additions to the ticking collection. One of the new timepieces added was the 5712-1A. When I received it I thought it would be somewhat of an underdog compared to the 5980. But...au contraire. The 5712 gets a lot of wrist time. And admittedly, I have not not worn the 5980 since I got the 5712.
The 5712 is slender and sits so well on my wrist. And as some of you may know the dials differ. To me at least. The dials of the 5711, 5712 and 5980 are all different. And admittedly the 5712 seem to have the better looks to me.
Now...that was all rosery and good. The downside about the 5712? That I have to adjust the moon phase manually every month!

mover is the question
... complicated watches rest in the mover ...
simple 2 hands not necessarily
it starts with dates and forex day-dates ...
with a moon-phase there is no way to wind it for wearing.

Are you really changing the moonphase every month or are you exaggerating?
Because even if you were adjusting the moonphase for months less than 31 days, you'd only be doing this five times a year. And even this is not necessary as one could (and should) simply depress the button on the side of the case with a wooden toothpick to advance the date on months shorter than 31 days without affecting the moonphase.
Perhaps you are having to adjust the moonphase every month because of something else?
If you don't wear your watch on an everyday basis, it may be a problem

The 5712 is indeed more superb looking in my eyes too.
I like the offset dial tremendously. The 5980 was nice from the back. But, didn't do it for me from the front (although, a the 5960 is spectacular). And as much as I like thick watches and bigger diameters, the 5712 is the winner.

I prefer 5980 because the dial looks more 'balance' compare to 5712.
5712 dial looks 'messy' especially the power reserve.

5980 - King of watches !
The 5980 is great Patek to own and in ten years time it will still be admired and respected.
The depth of the case excentuates the original "Submarine hatch" design with the hinge on the case.
