...the proportions and dials always look 'off' to me...

I confess that I commissioned a piece a few years back based on another KV I had seen and tweaked the dial configuration on a GMT-6. There were a few earlier dials that KV made that had different proportions before we came to a landing.

...but in particular, I think the Roman numerals they use are not elegant. They are 'flipped' to start with (a pet peeve of mine). The baselines of the numerals don't follow the curve of the dial edge, they are square. Look at the Chopard and Rolex examples to see how the numerals follow the curve of the dial. I find the KV crown to be far too big. The lugs are too prominent. And the IV instead of IIII throws the dial off balance. The examples with Arabic (1, 2, 3) dials look better to me. But their movements are much more pleasing to my eye. So I'll keep the movement, but would need a custom dial and case. I'm not that rich though : )

I went for a more simple approach for my GMT-6. The challenge with so many customization possibilities is that you can get lost in the design. I had seen a similar design which I liked. The proportions of the design fields are different to the more standard approach with these dials allowing for longer baton markers. You can see this in an earlier version compared to the final.








I agree that the crown is large - but as anyone who has wound one of these can attest, you need all of the crown circumference real estate to wind it! I’m not averse to the lug design, which as understand it, with many of the design elements is meant to allow for easier refinishing/polishing.

The movement as you have indicated is quite beautiful.












Overall I’m really happy with the design.

I really like the monotone guilloche dial finish here which I’m sure contrasts nicely with the blued hands.
