Each contestant has to post a photo of an object that reminds him (or her) of the HM2 watch as a reply to this announcement. Adding comments and reasons for the "similarity" will add points to the entry.
• The most interesting picture and story will be declared the winner by an expert panel of ONE judge - Max Busser - whose decision is final.

Closing date: Friday 23rd May 2008 at 23:59 PST (website server time).

 A DJ mix table! The pushers on the lower part remind me of the screws holding the bezzel, the centre part makes me think of the crown protector and of course the two recod players on each side make me think of the time and date/moon indications

I am not sure if everyone on this forum has seen this movie from the 80's but the MBF-2 reminds me of this cult classic and I feel it shares alot of similarities. The hero of the movie was this robot called Number 5. Just like the movie....I believe the MBF-2 is a cult icon and will be a cult classic in years to come.

Visually the head of Number 5 (name of the robot) is very similar to the MBF2.

Aptly titled as well...MBF-2 & Short Circuit 2. We all loved the 1st version and therefore there was a 2nd version made.

Check out the text on the poster....i bet some of us here reacted the same way when we saw the MBF-2. Its not just an ordinary watch. The design was "nuts and bolts" It was a piece of machinery, its a tool, its a robot.

To some Number 5 was just robot, its just a tool. Just like the MBF2...its a machine, its a tool.  But as the movie progresses, we see Number 5 actually has personality and slowly we all grew to love him. And I dare say that is how I felt for the MBF2, the more you learned about it, the more you "looked into" the machine's heart, you started to love it.

At the end of the day, Number5 enriched the life of those it met. MBF2 enriched our horological lives.

 

 

 

C3PO, especially in the scene on Jabba's ship above Sarlacc, where one of his eyes is picked out but alas, no clear pic of that.

HM2 makes me think of the eyes of Wall-E.

Its amazing how an inorganic, cold, silent, intricate machine can evoke emotions and feelings in you that sometimes even living organisms cannot. That warm tingling sensation you get inside is communicated through the eyes of Wall-E. In this case, the 2 watch faces.

These two complex mechanisms have a similar but very distinct personality, the share the "eyes" of an old soul. They are so expressive, that they tell the story of the world.

Take a look at that affable gesture! He's winking at you. Beckoning you to give his batteries (Springs) an Energy Boost (a few winds), to get his gears moving again.

Its Alive......Alive!!!!!!!

hm2 makes me think of ET actually... its the blue in the eyes... furthermore he's a dark shade of pink gold leathery skin for leather strap... the middle vent thing is the nose... the mbf logo is where his mouths at haha sorry if this is way out there.

I've heard that MBF-2 was inspired by UFO-Robo Grendizer or Goldorak, a classic Japanese Robot Animation.

Is that true?

Something Captain Nemo would have designed to wear aboard the Nautilus (as styled by Harper Goff)...

I was a huge fan of Star Trek since childhood.  The MBF-2 looks just like it came out of the 23rd century.

How cool is it to be able to wear one of these and not get laughed at as a geek!

Meet my friend Tim (a long time ago). His eyes look a bit robotic Teeth-logo looks very similar too The nose is placed a bit high (on the watch that is). The whole face of my friend is rectangular too, but in the other way. I think the guy who made th watch was at that same party where this picture was taken. Cheers, Filip

Maybe because I'm a surgical resident (one-track mind? ), this watch reminds me of an artificial heart, especially the Abiocor artificial heart (the first fully implantable artificial heart).

The first similarity that struck me was from the watch's two "portholes". They look like the external view of the heart - at most angles, you'll see two valves/vessels facing you.

Then several more things about the the two devices reminded me of each other.

One is the exterior of the watch: very high-tech but simple, just the like the heart; both are hiding really interesting technology inside. That internal technology performs a deceptively "simple" function (keeping time or pumping blood) that is actually complex and subtle.

Another similarity is between the rectangular form of the Horological Machine 2 and some older, external cardiac pumps, but the fact that you can wear the MBF-2 and take it with you is more like the fully implantable Abiocor, which travels everywhere inside the patient.

The next common theme between the watch and artificial hearts is brought up by the picture of the MBF-2 movement. The black part between the two round parts (apologies for not knowing more watch anatomy terms!) looks just like the mechanical devices that turn to pump fluid through some old artificial hearts, cardiac bypass pumps, and IV pumps.

Another is in the actual functioning of the movement. Beyond the fact that rotation lies at the heart of both mechanisms, the MBF-2's linking of the flyback minute snail to the jumping hour mechanism uses the energy of the "flying-back" efficiently to link two separate mechanisms. Similarly, the heart uses a single hydraulic pump with a rotating valve to power both sides of the heart - on one side of the pumping cycle, it pumps blood to the lungs, and on the other side of the same cycle, it pumps blood to the body. In each case, a single motion produces two different results.

Finally, lots of us think of the movement as the "heart: of the watch. From what I've read about it, the MBF-2 has an amazing "heart", just as an artificial heart is for a patient.

The time display reminds me of the clutch plates on my Ducati (especially the hour circle).  Some other similarities to a watch (and I may be stretching here... ) are a need to be properly adjusted at all times and, in the case of a wet clutch, properly lubricated to maintain optimal performance.

Put two clutch plates side-by-side and maybe this works...

I'm almost tempted not to post this. It might be misinterpreted as disrespectful. I'm going to treat this like an inkblot at the shrink's office though and post the picture that came to mind almost immediately.

Not my first time showing this but looking at two dials on a rectangle base - it reminded me of the MBF No.2.

Unfortunately, this pair here is just a little to big for my wrist.

The HM2, with it's elongated rectangular shape,  has a very mechanical and instrument-like look. Any subset of the 2 adjacent instruments from the panel would resemble HM2, IMHO.

Sorry, I love astronomy and couldn´t help it. This beatifull and amazing picture of a Supernova was taken by the Hubble telescope.

Can you see the similaritys?

The great machine I am talking about came up in 1950 and with the second edition (Machine No 2 !!!) in 1953 it became famous in the film industry. If I remember correctly  the film "Black Orpheus" (won the Palme d´Or at the 1959 Cannes Film Festival as well as the 1960 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and the 1960 Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film) was done with that great machine. ...

Stefan Kudelski (the man behind the machine) examined several systems for synchronizing the camera with the tape recorder. One such system worked from a signal generated by the tape recorder which then slaved a rotary converter feeding a synchronous motor on the camera. This method had disadvantages, being wasteful of power. At that time, power transistors were not sufficiently developed to allow the elimination of the rotary converter. The method finally adopted, as have others, is the reverse of this method. The camera generates a signal which is recorded on the same tape as the sound, thereby reducing the power consumption enormously. ... In addition to receiving an Oscar Plaque from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Stefan Kudelski, while in Hollywood, was entertained at a luncheon of sound directors and sound engineers of the motion picture and television industries.

During this luncheon, Kudelski explained, in some detail, the evolution that is now taking place in his manufacture of recording equipment, His long-range objective is to provide a recorder which will run for five years without service or trouble (like a good watch ;-) ). ...

It is pure mechanics, definitely high-end ... and Mr Kudelski was established in Geneva as well.

About 20 years ago I did a (short) film with some friends on 16mm and a NAGRA was just a dream for us, simple because it was to expensive. By the way, the whole film project was to expensive for us ;-) . But as a "young man", everything is possible.  Lucky us, we found some nice (professional) people which lent us some equipment and gave us some of their (already paid) time in the cutting studio. But that is another story ...

I really like Mr Busser´s projects and hope to see more in the future.

Functional assembly and regulation of the DNA replication machine

The machine has to reassemble from the individual parts, in a specific order, every cell cycle, to guarantee a single round of DNA replication.

If DNA is over- or under-replicated, due to mis-assembly of the DNA replication machine, genomic instability will occur and this could lead to cancer....death....chaos.
