It is now time to reveal this special version of the Tribute To Reverso 1931.

I was lucky enough to have a first and quick preview on the prototype of this watch in Geneva:



This was not the definitive watch I will introduce you later in this post, but it is always interesting to see the prototype, so this picture is for your eyes only.

Compared to the " normal " Tribute To Reverso 1931, the luminous indexes are darker.

The " Normal " TT 1931:



The changes are, on the definitive watch, much more important that it seems, at a first glance.

In the reality, it is closer to the pictures of the original Reverso you can see in the book " Jaeger-LeCoultre, La Grande Maison " :



The most visible changes are:

- The shape of the hands, which are now skeleton pointed, and baton shaped.

A historically controversial, but aesthetically pleasant point.

- The color of the indexes, as already said, which have a nice Vintage looking tan color.

- The Logo " Reverso " which is closer to its original " sister ".

- The strap, which comes from a famous Polo boot maker, Eduardo Fagliano, is made of cordovan, a very supple leather to wear, and to feel... One more astucious link with Polo.

One thing will not change, the elegant dimensions of this great Tribute, and, of course, the nice pleasant matt dial.

Nothing is certain, for the moment, for the next year.

What a surprise!

Honestly, my immediate thought was. "Why?" - it seems difficult to justify a version so close to the other TT1931 from a marketing point of view. You may argue that it is in line with the recent presentation of the Deep Sea US/EU versions, but these happend simultaneously and as tributes to two different historical watches.

BUT that being said, I will not dispute the US any further. For me, this watch hobby can only be justified by passion and against passion, rationality fights a hard battle. I personally prefer the US version. I love the pointed hands. And isn't there something about the crown? Bigger, slimmer and without logo (or is this a proto thing?). I think this US version is even more "vintage" than the first TT1931. And I am a great fan of shell cordovan - to the point where I would immediately replace the croc on any reverso...

I may just have to plan a trip to the US sometime later this year

I will risk a theory, here:

Those who like the " normal " TT 1931 may not like this US version, and vice versa.

Why?

Because there will always be people who will prefer the non faux patina for the indexes and hands, for example, or those who will prefer the more " casher " hands of the normal TT 1931.

And the inverse is true, too.

I see each of them as an alternative to the other.

I love a lot the " limited production " concept.

Why?

Because rarity does not have anything to see with the appeal of the watch.

You love it for what it is, not because it is rare.

It may be rare, it may not be, what matters is what you think on it, that is the most important for me.

What I meant is that notwithstanding the fact that it is not an LE, as there is no guarantee that it will be manufactired again next year it could de facto become an LE.

A new trend maybe?

OMG - another choice !

JLC - and you continue to feed desires in a rapid pace ..
Hmm - how does one easily get to LA - 100 pieces (Boutique edition, not LE, but handled as one - interesting)

Specifically I am allured by the color of the indices and the writing, a bit less by the hands, but ..

Does one have to think twice ? - I had already put the "classical (EU)" TT 1931 as a fixed "YES" in my head .

What a nice issue to have - another sweet dilemma, maybe ..

as I've already ordered the 1931 "standard" tribute and I don't live in the USA.

Personally I prefer the indices colour of the US version but I prefer the hands of the standard version. The font of the US version does not appeal to me.

Having said that, if I lived in the US I would have a tough time choosing between the two 1931 Tributes. Good luck to those who face this choice.

Not that I'm disturbed by the Reverso font on the dial, but, to me, even if they are nice, I prefer the hands on the " normal " TT 1931.

Don't get me wrong, The US version is a very nice and appealing watch, but I like the current version more.

Its nice but I still prefer the original tribute hands. While this is a nice variation, I hope JLC doesn't fall into the LE marketing tactics so many other brands have been doing with slight color/metal variations.

But honestly I was hoping for a much bigger surprise considering its the 80th anniversary of the Reverso. While I can understand the tribute to the original i also thought JLC should introduce something out of the box or create a new range of Reverso.

Considering the last couple of years which has been noothing short of fantastic years for the Reverso - The Triptyque, The Gyrotourbillion 2, The entire range of Eclipse, even the Squadra line.

I was really realy hoping to see a Reverso Memovox....a Reverso with Alarm function, that would be an ultimate for me.

Well hoping for a BASEL surprise...dreaming hopefully

 

 

It is limlited in production, which is absolutely not the same.

100 pieces this year, maybe more next year, maybe not.

Those who will love it will get it, those who have doubts about it will pass on it, that's a fair game.

The current TT 1931 is not limited, either, so all is well.

A new range of Reversos???

But the Grande Reversos ( and the 1931 included ) are a new range of Reversos, with an innovative very thin case.

And don't forget that this year, JLC introduced the Reverso Minute Repeater " à rideau ".

As for the Reverso Memovox, it won't be for this year, but maybe in a not too distant future?

First thought:  I wonder if I can order one through my AD.  I guess I am in trouble now.

Very interesting news!  I must admit I am a bit befuddled by the approach of the limited production without commitment beyond this year and without numbering.  I can't quite figure out if this makes it seem more or less rare -- but I think Nicolaj hit upon it already above: this is not a rational hobby anyway, so why try to make it so?

In any case, I like the sublte changes a lot.  The pointed hands that are so close to the original look great, even though I like the hands on the "normal" version very much. 

The font for Reverso looks like it very closely resembles the original -- is that the case?  It is hard to tell exactly from the images. 

Nicolas, what do you think about this alternate US edition and the limited production at least for one year approach?

1/ About the LP approach, I think, honestly, that it is an excellent thing.

As I wrote before, only the honest lovers of this watch will get it, not the flippers or those who are more interested about the LE phenomenon.

You don't know how many were made. It may be rare, or not, it doesnt matter.

What matters is the watch, and only the watch, so it is an excellent point in my opinion.

By the way, this is not the first time JLC released LP... The Amvox I in SS is a Limited Production, as well as some others, like the Duometre à Chronographe Boutique Edition in platinum, with the white dial if I'm not wrong.

2/ About the watch, now...

I have a slight preference for the TT 1931 " normal " edition, because of the hands, and I also slightly prefer the less colored indexes.

I had a doubt about the dial of the normal TT 1931,as I found that, on the official pics, they were too white.

When I saw the watch in Geneva, I was very happy with them.

One thing I would have loved on the normal TT 1931 is the Cordovan strap of the US version, as well as the writing " Reverso " which is closer to the original.

So, yes, I prefer the normal, but the ideal for me would have been to get the normal, with the Reverso writing of the US version, as well as its Cordovan Strap.

Am I asking too much?

Yes, of course!

Personally, I like this one more than the normal TT1931, the strap is one of my favourite points of this watch, I also like the lume and overall look, it feels more like a vintage piece.

What do you think of the watch Nicholas?

I would have loved a mix of the two, to make it short:

Same dial and hands than on the normal TT 1931, and same reverso writing than on the US, with the same Cordovan strap...

You wont normally find flippers buying a JLC, its for people that are passionate about watches.
JLC's choice to not number them was an excellent choice

I spoke to the Beverley Hills boutique last night, they told me that one of the reasons the watch was made was to increase the interest in the boutique, instead of people just flocking to the ADs. I really hope that I do get one, as I really really really like this USA version. I might have my country's coat of arms engraved and enameled on the back as an homage to the original reversos

To be clear, I speak in generak terms, I don'tr mention the Reverso, here.
