Right before I left, I asked to see the photo one more time and said, “What’s that at 12 o’clock?”
It was a date.😔
When the TAG Heuer Carrera Skipper was announced a few months later in July 2023, my curiosity was piqued again. The color scheme, the sailing heritage, the overall vibe — it felt fresh yet unmistakably “Heuer.” Thanks to the hype, I couldn’t see one in the flesh until May 2024:

Initial impressions? Mixed.
My first thought was: with the recent release of the Glassbox Carreras, why not create something purely for the collectors? Why include a date? And what about that “ghost register” at 6 o’clock? Why not go all in and produce a true modern-day reissue for the purists?🧐

But then… the positives.
That blue dial is simply fantastic. And the way the tachymeter sits on the outer edge of the curved flange beneath the crystal is brilliant. It creates a beautiful 3D effect and adds tremendous depth to the dial. In certain lighting, the layers really come alive — it’s one of those watches you keep tilting back and forth just to watch the dial shift and play.

At the time, there was a several-month waitlist, and I had other pieces ranking higher on my emotional scale. So I passed.
But I kept circling back. Every boutique or AD visit, I’d find myself asking to see it again. And each time, I warmed up to it a little more. The quirks started to feel less like compromises and more like character.

Fast forward to now — I stopped by an AD who happened to have two in stock. No wait. No list. Just sitting there.
This time, it felt different.
And I decided now was the time to pull the trigger.
The Skipper has officially joined the collection.🥂
