I’ve been collecting watches for almost 30 years, and a couple of days ago I had the privilege of acquiring this beautiful 1951 Hamilton 992B.
I’m absolutely thrilled with this pocket watch. I know it’s not in the original case, but that’s perfectly fine with me. I’m a sucker for movements, and this aftermarket display case lets me fully enjoy what is, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful American movements ever made. All originals had solid casebacks, so being able to admire it anytime is a huge plus.
This piece was fully serviced, is running within about two seconds per day, and shows a very healthy amplitude—hard to ask for more from a 75 year-old watch.
In a few of the photos, I paired it with my F.P. Journe Resonance. The contrast really struck me. The Hamilton is a true tool watch—built for a critical purpose, where precision literally helped prevent accidents in railroad transportation. The Resonance, on the other hand, represents a completely different philosophy—pushing the boundaries of what’s possible, bringing the phenomenon of resonance into a wristwatch for the first time.
Two very different worlds, yet they share the same DNA: innovation, craftsmanship, and beautifully executed movements with a clear purpose behind them. That, to me, is what makes this hobby so compelling.
It’s also a great reminder that “high horology” doesn’t always require a huge financial outlay. This entire package cost less than factory FP Journe alligator strap, yet it delivers incredible craftsmanship, history, mechanical beauty, and a lot of enjoyment.
I know it would not be directly FPJ related, but hope and exception could be granted from moderators and would love to see if anyone else here has a pocket watch to share—there’s just something special about these pieces. Please share some pics 👍.
