You can't compare these approaches.
You have several ways to increase the power reserve: basically, if you don't change the barrel and of course, the frequency, you have to influence the behaviour of the balance wheel. If you use new materials to lighten the balance wheel, to reduce its inertia, to influence its quality angle like Patek did it, with a similar lay-out and with a similar barrel, yes, you improve the power reserve as the movement is less energy consuming. It is exactly what Breguet did with its 10hz watch. Without the new materials, the watch would have been bigger than a plate.
Lange is not in this trend: they wish to use only traditional materials. So except some minor changes on the balance wheel to improve its behaviour, the only way is to put a bigger barrel. It is also what they did with the new caliber of the 1815 chronograph. There was enough space to do it. It appears that it is not the case with the Datograph because the power reserve remains the same.
I prefer that Lange keeps its traditional approach. Some brands are involved a lot with the new materials like silicium but it is something I don't expect from Lange.

The idea was to be able to enlarge the barrel in order to increase the power reserve. Power reserve of the new caliber is 72 hours while the 3/4 plate movement has a power reserve of 46 hours. And the main trouble of a 3/4 plate movement is its lay-out wh...
I totally agree with you.

For me the increase of this PR is not worth the removal of the 3/4 plate movement. But you know, to increase the PR to 72 hours allows to the owners to leave the watch for the week-end (even maybe the french clients with our larger week-ends will find thi...
Mostly in agreement

One other minor change, that I can't evaluate until I've had a chance to wear a new one, is the casebase. On the old one, the top of the sapphire was even with the caseback, it was completely flat. On the new one, it seems the sapphire and a thin bezel ar...
thanks for the overview

that was very interesting. I have to say I prefer the old watch all the way - definitely as far as the movement is concerned but I also like the thicker and rounded bezel as something I associate with Lange and rather like. I also really like blued second...
