As far as I know,

 

the Petite Sonnerie complication chimes the hours only when the full hours pass and, for the remaining three quarters of an hour, it only chimes the corresponding number of quarters.
Whereas the Grande Sonnerie complication rings at the passage of each quarter of an hour the number of hours, as well as the number of quarters of an hour.
I think the complication which only strikes (once) the passing of each hour is called "Sonnerie au passage" (Striking Hour, like the Chopard L.U.C Strike One).
And I completely agree with you concerning the top complication in a very simple aesthetic.
