Chopard

I must see this in the metal.

For a very long time I have been wondering when Chopard will case up the LUC 96 family in steel.  Ever since the original 1.96 I've been wanting it in steel.  The movements are lovely and I have a lot of respect for what they've accomplished.  So this is long-awaited and eagerly anticipated on my part.

It's not quiiiiiite perfect to my eyes, though...

1. The date aperture bugs me - if only there were a bevel into that hole for the date (see the original 1.96 for an example).  At least it's at 6 o'clock!

2. What about a no-date model?  But the more I look at it, the more I notice something else:  the seconds subdial seems a bit high - this is a 40mm watch, after all, and the movement is no larger than before - so maybe the date is disguising this to some extent.  Hmmm.

3. The other thing that I'm not sure about is the '12' digits.  I've never been a fan of a lonely number on the dial.  Would probably be much happier if they'd just put two hour markers at the 12 o'clock position.  (Again, just like the original 1.96...)

4. Lastly, comparing it to the XPS 1860 in rose gold which also recently debuted, there appears to be a very real difference in movement finishing.  The engraving on the bridges is much simpler; the anglage looks to be unpolished; smaller components have not received detail in finishing.  I'm not quite sure why this has to be...surely I'm not the only person out there who values a beautifully-finished movement but doesn't really want a precious metal case?

Conclusion:  Must see in the real.  Maybe all these things won't matter.  And it will be very interesting to see how the commercial proposition adds up as well.
